This Octonauts birthday cake, based upon the BBC children’s programme, was a real blast to create. We decided to incorporate the most popular characters, along with their submarine, into an edible sea scape. The cake itself was a vanilla sponge sandwiched with buttercream and carved into shape before being covered with coloured fondant icing. The characters, Captain Barnacles, Peso and Kwazi, were all hand crafted from fondant as was the board covering, including the starfish and coral. To give the submarine a feeling of movement we twisted ribbons of fondant to make them appear as sea trails created by the sub as it is propelled along.
