We Donated this cake for Harrisons Christening on Sunday and he sadly passed away on Tuesday and only 4 months old.

The Story:

I was contacted by a friend of Harrisons family Kerrie Bates with Harrisons story …

I am contacting you on the off chance that you may be able to help. I am currently trying to raise money to help my friend’s baby. He has just been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. He is just 2 months old.SMA is a devastating, genetic disease. It is a leading genetic killer of infants and toddlers, with 5
0% of the most severely diagnosed cases resulting in death by the age of two. Children with a less severe form of SMA face the prospect of progressive muscle wasting, loss of mobility and motor function. But their minds are unaffected resulting in bright, intelligent children with varying degrees of physical impairment.

•SMA is currently incurable and often fatal

•1 in every 6,000 births is affected by SMA

•1 in every 40 people is a carrier of the defective gene that causes SMA

•the child of two carriers has a one in four chance of developing SMA

•SMA affects motor neurons in the spinal cord. This results in muscular weakness, leading to severe disability and the possibility of premature death

SMA is currently incurable. His name is Harrison Voyce. He has a 3 year old brother who knows there is something happening with his brother but doesn’t know what. He is too young to be told that his brother is dying. Harrison has type 1 SMA. Current statistics show that the average lifespan of a child with SMA Type I, not put on permanent ventilation or “life support”, is only 8 months of age, with 80% dying by the age of one, and the majority of the rest dying by age of 2.

Harrison’s parents want to get him christened. Due to the condition this needs to be done sooner rather than later. They have not got much money and his mother is still on maternity leave.

I am trying to raise money to help with the cost of the christening, specialist equipment he will need and so they can say goodbye properly when the time comes. I am looking for donations of anything if people can help so we can raise some money. I have got some tables booked for events and am doing things like tombola’s, raffles etc and need some prizes of any kind.

The message from Kerrie brought a tear to my eye, my little boy is 6 months old and I can’t imagine how you would cope with something like this.

We decided to do something extra special and donate a cake for both Hayden & Harrison who were both being christened on the same day.
