About the competition: Cakes unplugged, a Fondbites League together with Fondbites, School of Sugar Art conducted it’s first online cake decorating competition which was open to all aspiring cake artists around the world. The theme was Modern Wedding Cakes.
The entries were judged by three eminent artists in the industry, Ashwini Sarabhai, Aarti Mirji and Samie Ramachandran.
Last but not least, I would like to thank Subhashini Ramsingh for the wonderful opportunity and for being so generous and kind. Hats off to you for all the work you are doing, Subhashini.
About the cake: The inspiration for my cake is Kanjeevaram Silk Sarees, the jewelry worn by the bride and the decor of the venue. I also chose ultra violet which is the color pantone for 2018.
I used fabric block print blocks to imitate the traditional mango brocade in the kanjivaram silk sarees. I chose red because of the unique combination with ultra violet and also the auspicious color in Indian weddings.
The inspiration for sugar flowers come from the venue decor in Indian weddings which is usually decorated with bright, multi colored flowers.
I’m always fascinated by the uniqueness about the traditional temple jewelry that are made out of Kemp stones. I also believe the bride looked like a princess once she is adorned with the temple jewelry and is an ensemble along with the kanjeevaram silk saree. I’ve used Isomalt to imitate the traditional temple jewelry with green Kemp stones.
I truly believe the cake represents a South Indian bride who deserves an unique cake that represents her. I also believe the cake represents the bling and grandiose of the traditional South Indian wedding in a modern way.
I’m so glad that I made it to the top 10!!
