’Attenborough’s Ark’ was my entry for Cake International in November ‘17- in the ’Pushing The Boundaries’ category- and I was over the moon to be awarded ‘GOLD’!
My daughter suggested that I should make a sculpture of Sir David Attenborough, but although I had previously been apprehensive of replicating a famous personality, I accepted the challenge! With the extra large area of 3′ × 2′ 6" allowed, then Sir David had to be life-sized!
I admire Sir David tremendously and this is my tribute to the great man!
’Attenborough’s Ark’ is about the 10 weird, wonderful & endangered animals that he would choose to save for his own personal ark- so here he kneels in a typical pose, surrounded by these amazing creatures which are; a baby Sumatran rhino, solenodon, Darwin’s frog, Venus’ flower basket, Priam’s birdwing butterfly, marvellous spatuletail hummingbird, Sunda pangolin, black lion tamarin and the olm.
This sculpture has an internal structure of chicken wire, foam & poles with coverings of chocolate, sugarpaste & modelling chocolate. Sir David’s head and the baby rhino are completely edible, being made internally from rkt (rice krispies& marshmallows). He weighs an absolute ton!- but I’m still trying to work out the exact amount!

Hi Calli- ahh thank you!- your comment means so much as an artist of your standard- as I was still unsure of his features being correct- it’s sooo difficult to capture the exact look of someone & I think I’d been looking at him for so long that I was never going to be happy! I’m just so pleased that people actually did recognise him after all!! Haha!
