As a mother of two sons who are on the autistic spectrum I was honored to be asked to join the Sugar Art 4 Autism collaboration for 2017.

I wanted to do a piece that was an interpretation of the issues surrounding sensory processing disorders (SPD) which is a condition associated with autism. For those who have this condition for some it can mean that they can be sensitive to sound, sights, touch, tastes or smells. Normally by the time your body has developed to adult stages you will have learnt to filter out unnecessary sensory information. Those with sensory processing disorders tend not to have this development and as a result can become overwhelmed resulting in heightened anxiety.

My submission is of a male with ASD suffering with the symptoms of SPD. He is covering both his eyes and his ears at the same time and the swirling waters (and inspiration taken from a picture by the artist Michael Tolleson) represents his sinking feeling and anxiety levels.
