Purple minion for my nephew.
Layered 6" vanilla cakes filled with and covered in ganache, then covered in homemade modelling chocolate. The cake is supported internally by two small round boards, a 4" and a 5" round board and there are three wooden dowels supporting the boards that finish at different heights in the cake. The hair is vermicelli noodles that have soaked in water with Americolor regal purple and Violet, then dried. There is a thicker layer of modelling chocolate on the character’s “scalp” which protects the cake from the noodles and holds them in place. I partially scalped the character before cutting it up, the noodles are completely edible, but they aren’t nice to eat. The arms are supported by a single piece of thick, food grade armature wire. This is carved cake from the bottom of the overalls to the top of the figure’s head. It was my first attempt at a 3D carved gravity defying cake.
There are progress shots on my facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/robertscakesandcooking
