When I was asked to do this cake, I was so flattered and terrified at the same time. I’d done so many tiered cakes before, but they were display cakes. It’s easy to stack pieces of Styrofoam and put fondant on them, but a real cake?! The mother of the daughter having the baby gave me a picture as reference and just basically let me take over from there. I must say I did OD on the gumpaste flowers – not all of them fit on the cake, but I had a fun time doing them and gave the rest to the soon-to-be mother as a keepsake. The middle tier was my personal favorite. I found this amazing stencil and looked very high-end, yet girly at the same time. The baby carriage/cradle was done in rice crispy treats and then covered with fondant. The bottom tier had a rough ride down to the venue, one side of the rosettes got smashed and so repairs were needed. Never could tell after I got it fixed. The writing I do is ALWAYS free-handed. I am a calligrapher as well and love doing fancy scrolling with words. The lily was hand painted with luster pearl dust and edible coloring. The display board and stand my dad was so gracious to make (he loves doing wood crafting); and I used a fringe that I found at Hobby Lobby to cover the edge and then made some fabric flowers. I learned a lot of things from it and know what I’d do differently next time, but for my first one; gotta say I’m very satisfied.
