This cake was meant for two little girls who were performing “A spoonful of sugar” at their school. The client’s brief was that the cake had to be instantly recognisable as Mary Poppins and also that Mary HAD to be wearing her hat! Much as I would’ve loved to recreate the nursery where the song takes place in the movie – there was a budget restraint. So I chose to have Mary clearly wearing her hat and with her umbrella (though she doesn’t really have either when she’s got her apron on indoors!) and used hand-painted and gum paste daisies as those are Mary Poppins’ favourite flowers. The cake was a 10inch round lemon cake.
