I don’t do many children’s cakes at all, but was delighted to receive a commission for a cake based on the children’s book “Room On The Broom” by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

As the birthday girl’s name is Emily, this lent itself perfectly to adapting one of the memorable refrains from the book to “I am a girl called Emily, Is there room on the broom for a girl like me?”.

I love modelling figures, but I always find it so much more of a challenge when they have to look like recognisable illustrated characters rather than having free rein on my modelling…hopefully I’ve done Axel Scheffler’s characters justice!
