My cousin ask me to make a pizza cake for her son’s birthday.
Like most of my cakes thus far, it will be a first.
So it took me all of 2 weeks, if not more to figure out how I’m
going to make the cake. (That’s the hard part, for me at least)
Here’s how I did it:
Already prepared and waiting is the chocolate mousse, buttercream to which i added red and
brown color paste (tomato base), the red peppers, green peppers, olives, mozzarella cheese,
salami and chicken strips are all made with modelling chocolate.
I baked a 14 inch chocolate cake, cut in half to get a double pizza effect.
I wrapped and popped it in the freezer to harden a bit.
I then cut about 2cm into the top cake, steering clear from the outside edge though,
lifted the "flap"and had a perfect indent for the filling.
Next I dirty iced the outside part of cake. Roll ivory colored fondant out into a strip,
long and wide enough to go around and partly over and under the circumference of cakes.
Carefully roll the fondant onto a rolling pin, and here is where a second pair of hands come
in handy :)). Now carefully hold rolling pin close to cake while the other pair of hands stick the
fondant , while u slowly do the unrolling . (Did I mention a turn-table is very handy here).
Generously pipe mousse and spoon ganache onto bottom layer and set aside.
Pipe buttercream (tomato gravy)onto top layer and then swirl cream with the back of a spoon.
Next add mozzarella. Now to make the cake look like a pizza we need to grill it.
So for the first time I’m going to be using a blowtorch!!!
Click, Click got a flame and effortlessly (I wish, lol) browned the fondant(base),
buttercream (tomato gravy) and modelling choc (mozzarella).
Then added a layer of salami, the peppers and the olives.
I then placed "chicken strips and peppers around the outside edge of bottom layer.
Carefully place the top cake on top of the bottom cake.
A final browning over with the blowtorch completes the cake.
I also designed the pizza order stub and had a sugarprint transfer made.
The birthday boy’s age is the order number
and his name as pizza shop.
Topping and fillings are attributes.
Hope you like it.
