My second wedding cake this year. I love everything about weddings. They are fun, they are colorful and everyone (mostly ;) :P ) is happy. I tried to catch the hope, love and faith in my last wedding cake. In this cake, I tried to incorporate the fun, vibrance and essence of a Maharashtrian wedding.

The bride and groom toppers are in the traditional Maharashtrian wedding attire. The bride is wearing a yellow nine yards saree, and mangalsutra. Both are wearing “mundavlya” the customary beaded face jewelry that a bride and groom wear on their wedding.

The colors of the cake were inspired by the bride’s reception dress. The lower tier had Warli painting, with scene of a Warli wedding depicted in the front. This is the first time that Warli painting has been done on a cake. Warli painting is a tribal art form native to Maharashtra, where poor tribals use these simple figures to depict their daily life on their walls. They color the walls red, and use a rice paste to make these paintings. Find more about Warli Art here http://bit.ly/1wyVpl6

The middle tier was made to look like the traditional Marathi saree Pallu. Using bottle green fondant and gold damask pattern.

The upper tier is a carved cake, made to look like a Kolhapuri Pheta or Pagdi, a sign of honor in Maharashtra.

There are also Frangipani flowers in there. I didn’t know they were called frangipanis. When I first looked up this flower in a youtube tutorial, I exclaimed to myself, “This is Chaafa!” Chaafa is a very very Maharashtrian flower with a whole song dedicated to it in Marathi grin emoticon Besides it looks very beautiful. I used gold instead of yellow to color the centers of the flowers to make them more festive.

The cake was made in 48 hours start to finish. What do you think about this cake?
