This is a cake that I specifically made as an entry cake at our local cake show. I had never tried out doing the wood grain before and was quite pleased at how it turned out on the base. It was made using several colors of random fondant leftovers rolled into long rolls and then twisted into something similar to a rope, then rolled out right onto plexiglass board. It looked crazy at first because it had reds, blues, purples and any other random color I had around. After I had it completely rolled out and trimmed, I thinned down some brown food paste color with Vodka and painted it right onto the rolled out fondant in long brush strokes following the grain.
All of the larger fruits and vegetables have Rice Krispy Treats as the base and then covered in fondant, and then enhanced with petal dusts. The basket was made using royal icing, and the ‘filler’ for the basket was fondant that I created using an extruder with the smallest holes. It resembled spaghetti when it came out and once it was dry, I broke it all up for the straw affect. Each kernal of corn was hand rolled into balls and placed onto my base. Grapes too were just balls rolled and positioned where I wanted them, then dusted with petal dust. I received a blue ribbon on this cake from that show. Thank you for looking! =O)

Wow, WOW! Linda, this is unbelievable! If I didn’t know better, I would swear that it is an actual fruit and vegetable basket. So realistic! I love the wood board too! I also love your detailed description of how you make your masterpieces!

Thank you Toni. I do that because it always frustrates me when I find a great piece with no description with it. I’m all about sharing techniques and teaching. That’s the way I learned and if I have anything to offer back, then hopefully they can learn from whatever I post. =O)

I agree with Toni,These are truly realistic and fabulous!

awww, thank you Nadia! You always say the kindest things.

Linda, your work is so beautiful and I am enjoying seeing your stunning cakes. It is so obvious that you enjoy perfection and attending to the tiniest detail. I would like to offer one little suggestion for future photos. If you could put a stand-up bi-fold or tri-fold presentation board behind the cakes it would cut out all the background in the room. If I have a few extra minutes, I drape my board with some fabric or a tablecloth to enhance the colors on my cake. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your beautiful work.

Thank you Joy for your encouraging words. I do have a tri-fold that I use on occasion. I’ve just started using that in the last year. Unfortunately, these were taken prior to purchasing it.
