I know just how you feel – the deaded bulge!!! For your next cake, make sure you refrigerate your cake thoroughly after you crumb-coat it – overnight would be great. I live in Florida where the humidity is awful and I’ve noticed that refrigerating the cake overnight has kept me from getting those unsighlty bulges. Short of removing the fondant, as you did, there’s not much you can do – other than use decorations – I’ve added ribbon borders, gumpaste flowers, etc. That works well enough, but it depends on your cake.
