Hi all! I would like to share with you this wedding cake which I was fortunate enough to make. The buntings and colour scheme plus the birdcage was their ideas. I was given swatches to guide me through the creation of this cake.

I tried as much as possible to have the buntings match the ones they use at the garden where the reception will spread out. The second tier was hand-painted and I used the NEXT wallpaper as a reference as they used it as part of their invitations.

The cakes are 12", 10", 8" and 6" birdcage. The 3 tiers are 4 inches high each and the birdcage is approximately 9" high. This is a a very tall cake, all sponge with buttercream and jam, covered in ganache and fondant.

I recommended the birdcage to be made of fruit cake, but being a first timer in fruit cakes, I didn’t realise how heavy the cake was so I ended up making two birdcages…one made of polystyrene which went on top of the cake and another identical birdcage made of fruit cake. The later ended on the presidential table next to the bride and groom and this turned out to be a great idea. The moulds I used were purchased in the US. I bought them from Couture Cakes by Rose.

Today was quite humid and while setting the cake up, I could feel my sugar flowers and leaves starting to go soft. I was called back after an hour saying that the rose on the cake has fallen off :(. ’Had to rush back and managed to replace it with a new one. All in all, it was a good day and the cake has won the hearts of the hotel owners…so hopefully, they will think of me when they think of cakes :D.

One thing though that I forgot to do…a major one that i am so gutted about…it is taking a photo of myself with the cake! But there you go. I am pretty sure many of you out there has done that before :). Have a lovely evening!
