I did this cake as part of Miso Bakes’ monthly challenges. This particular month’s challenge was to create a cake design in a repeating pattern using the petal tip. This was what I came up with. Chocolate cake with swiss meringue buttercream.

Thanks, ladies! Petal tip (any size will do), skinny side out, make little “loops”. Easy, peasy and looks like it took a long while. :)

Do you go from bottom to top, or round and round? I’m sorry, I’m not getting it! I’ve done the ruffles with a petal tip and really love this, but I can’t work it out! :-(

Thank you, CakesOnTheLane!
RoyalBakery, I started at the bottom and went round and round and just made a ton of those little “shell” shaped petals.

Rachel, would you consider making a video tutorial of this technique for those of us who are too thick to figure this out!? xx

Sure! As long as you all are very forgiving to my blubbering ways! Give me a couple weeks and I’ll get one together for you.

Ah! I’m thinking I might be starting to understand! So do you take the tip off the cake after each one? It’s not continuous like the traditional ruffle? I must give this a go. It’s heavenly. And thank you for trying so hard to help us understand!
