This was my entry for Cake International Spring 2016, made onto dummies. The whole thing took many weeks and was many hours in the dreaming about. I learnt so many new techniques to try and get what was in my head to work in reality.
The knitted tier was made from extruded fondant, looped then placed individually. Strangely relaxing after a while…The cable knit pieces were very tricky and not quite right but I’d stared at so many jumpers I’d had enough.
The dogs were modelling chocolate, I love those handsome Westies.
The corset tier was a slab of modelling chocolate, textured to try and imitate leather with a plastic impression mat ( very cheap, and very effective) The heart design was cut to appear like leather cut work, I always admire this craft but don’t possess any of it. I used a stitch tool around the edges. The back was laced up, but I haven’t pics of that.
Flowers were made from flower paste, I spent far too long on thistles and pinecones and fir branches which were all horribly fragile and several didn’t make the car journey to Birmingham.
The thistle design was finished several weeks after I’d come home from CI, I wanted to finish what was in my head before I melted it all off in the dishwasher. It’s meant to be bad relief, but not the best attempt.
My favourite bit was the tartan, over which I obsessed for days, trying painting it, using coloured strips, hanging, ruching, different shades.. I was happy with the end result. And the frilly bits were fun to do.
I was amazed to get a gold and third in class. I still can’t believe it!
