This is a very special cake, it is for my own dad who was 70 this weekend, so I have had to transport this monster 230 miles!
I really like designing printed icing sheets for cakes – they can look amazing. And I recommend you all invest in a few petal dusts / powder colours, as using them to accent your fondant brings a design alive – I used an ochre, white pink and black to age the board and top of the top tier.
He has had a recording studio upstairs since I was a child, hence the keyboard and music notes, and the topper is a model of the surprise present he will get at the party, a new limited edition Takemine guitar (complete with hand painted Sherpa on the neck), as his old one had been damaged beyond repair for years. The top tier is a selection of articles from the Glasgow Herald newspaper from November 29th 1945, his birthday, and I have to say it is an interesting read!
