This cake was created for the surprise 50th birthday of an golf enthusiast. Not being a golfer myself, I had to do a little research to get an idea of how to design this cake. The client requested a cake shaped like a golf ball, which I wanted to incorporate within the scenic landscape of a golf course. I had a vision of a picturesque course with a running stream tucked amid green rolling hills, interspersed with pine trees and boulders. All the decorations are handcrafted and edible, and the golf ball topper is an all-cake sphere. Creating a spherical cake was definitely a new challenge to master, but I’m pleased that I was able to pull it off. Once I ensured the structural integrity of the cake, I quite enjoyed the process of designing this cake and the adding all the little details. There were some fun personalized features to the design including the edible sign bearing the name of the “golf and country club”, which was of course named after the celebration’s guest of honour, as well as the golf ball bearing the name of his brand of choice. I’m told the cake made a great impression on the guests and created quite an impact when it was brought out. I’m always so grateful to hear that kind of positive feedback – it’s probably the most rewarding part of the process!
