Hi Lizzie, yeah definately use a central dowel and I would fix it into the board. I usually drill a small hole just a little bit smaller than my dowel so it fits in tight. You could also double your cake boards up to have more depth to push it into. Just glue them together. And if your cat has anything extending off it, such as arms then I would definately use more dowels, skewers are good or even strong flower wire. Plus, leave a day for your cake to set if its travelling so far you want to make sure any fondant etc. is really dry. Then it should travel fine xx hope this helps :-)
