I think your final cake is lovely. I was taught that a totally edible cake should be just that. No wires or toothpicks, etc.. That could injure a child or choke someone. What I learned was to construct on and insert with … raw spaghetti! My addition to this technique, if you need something stronger is to use buccatelli. Spaghetti that is like a straw, hollow in the middle. You can fortify it too by filling it with royal icing. You do not want anyone injured eating your cakes.
