Hi, I was taught that you cover the wires with florist tape and then insert them into a straw before putting them into the cake as the exposed wire or covered wire can contaminate that section where the wire is going into the cake. If you enter your cakes into competitions here in South Africa and you have placed the wire directly into the cake, you get marks deducted as they class it as contamination, you must put the wire into a straw or into a cake pick, which is similar to a straw
