I was commissioned to make a celebration cake for a large NZ based travel company’s birthday, the function was at the Te Puia Maori Arts & Crafts Institute, as the 2 companies work closely together so I decided to make the bottom tier about Te Puia incorporating the boiling mud of the Whakarewarewa Thermal park & the Maori carving of the Wharenui (meeting house) and the TekoTeko (carved figurines) & edible flax weaving, the top tier needed to have the General Travel Logo with the flags of the seven countries that General travel has offices…also adoring the top tier is a carved head of Maui backed by the long spiked sticks that surround Te Puia

Rotorua where I live is famous for it’s geothermal activity of Geysers & boiling mud (we literally live in a collapsed volcano crater) & is the epicentre of Maori Tourism for NZ…so this cake was a pleasure to be able to incorporate so many aspects of my town’s tourism

Cake was to be displayed sitting atop rocks with dry Ice underneath to signify the steam from Te Puia’s Geothermal activity

awesome your carving are amazing are they molds?

Thanks Kiwicakebloke, yes carvings are from Molds although i had to make them myself as you can’t buy anything remotely like these even the flax ribbon had to be made into a mold

fogot to ask how did you get the colour of the carvings so similar to the real colour on Marae, what colour did you use?

Haha Kiwicakebloke…I call it Marae red…it’s about 2/3 chocolate bakels pettinice mixed with 1/3 red satin ice & a dash of purple or blue to alter hue, sometimes you’ll need to add a small amount of white to lighten slightly…hope that helps :-)
