Second cake ever! Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting covered in camouflage fondant. So much fun to do all those details, even though I had no idea what I was doing!

Hi, Ann-Marie. Thank you!

I baked this in a Pyrex bowl (it was only the second cake I’d ever made so had no cake pans!) – it’s 8” in diameter and 4” high. I carved it a little to get the right shape using my son’s army helmet as a guide.

I’m sure you don’t need any help, but if I can tell you anything else, let me know. I remember writing up the camouflage fondant technique for someone else, so I can find that if it’s useful.

Can’t find the tutorial I’d written up before (grrrr), but it was pretty easy. I used three colours of fondant and then mixed half of each of them together to make the fourth, base colour. They were dark green, light green and brown. I ended up with the real army green for my base.

Start with a flattened ball of your base colour. Now use fat sausages of the other colours, create a tiny camouflage pattern on top. It’s completely random, but you want the colours to intersect in places (see the front of the helmet, below the red cross badge). You want to have the pattern continue all over the base colour, but have gaps showing through. Then you just roll out, taking cake to roll in lots of different directions so that you preserve the camouflage pattern.

I hope that makes sense and I’m sure that’s exactly how you thought of doing it! I’ve seen a tutorial where someone intersected actual pieces of cut out fondant, but I think that would make me explode! Good luck.

Thanks Lesley,

I found a tutorial from Sharon Z where she actually cup the pieces out like a puzzle. And I saw another on camo. I will let you know how it goes! Thanks again! =)
