"Forgotten juveniles"

"Forgotten juveniles"

Here’s my take on the “Day of the African child 2018” collaboration.. my cake is on the Juvenile prisons in our country.. “17 year old Mwansa sits in the wee hours of the night, over come with feelings of hopelessness.. this is his 30th night in custody in a Lusaka correctional facility. His charge is that he has been accused of stealing a packet of spaghetti from a local market. He sits because in the 2×4 metre cell he shares with 60 other teens, there is no longer space enough for them to lay down to sleep at night.Instead he crouches in a row of other children, leaning his head on the boy in front of him, waiting for morning to come..”

The above passage is a gripping reality of a night in life of a vulnerable juvenile incarcerated in an adult faculty in Zambia. This child, amongst many others, lack any form of legal education, nutrition and health care as well as mental health services whilst they are marginalised and imprisoned, falling into a circle of hopelessness.

The Undikumbukire Project Zambia is a project extremely dear and close to my heart..it comprises of a group of selfless community members who work tirelessly to bring structure and justice to the under developed, and under resourced juvenile justice system..the project aims to represent these children in a fair and firm manner, reminding them that there are people who care for their well-being.

I have used this golden opportunity to highlight the unfortunate issue of our “Forgotten Juveniles” and hope to bring light to this important matter.

So shocking for this to be happening in 2018! Your very moving piece illuminates the oppression and the hopelessness. Hopefully there will be better days.

How absolutely awful!! Those poor children. A very poignant piece and definitely depicts the sadness and hopelessness..
