Kanatica
Chiprovtsi kilims (Bulgarian: Чипровски килим, Chiprovtsi Kilim) are handmade flatwoven kilim rugs with two identical sides, part of Bulgarian national heritage, traditions, arts and crafts. Their name is derived from the town of Chiprovtsi where their production started in the 17th century.
Inscribed in 2014 (9.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
Hand woven using ancient technology, intensive labor, craftsmanship and imagination they became symbol of the old days and epochs for generations and traditions.
Passed from generation to generation the technology survived to present days.
Central motif in Chiprovtsi kilims is the Kanatica – eight-pointed star in cross like shape. Its stylized exaggeration is the reason for the asymmetrical look.
The word Kanatica is meaning wing in the way of protection. It is an important symbol in people’s life. As per ancient belief it brings luck and prosperity for the family and protects all the members of the household.
