I present to you, my showpiece for Acts of Green in conjunction with Earth Day!

My inspiration for this piece came from Davide Bonazzi’s piece from Art for the Arctic 30 campaign. It was a powerful artwork that depicts the destruction of the polar bears’ natural habitat with oil companies setting their sights in the North Pole. It evoked a sense of doom and darkness with the black oil dripping over the only habitat these bears live in, and this is what I wanted to recreate in sugar.

The polar bear was modelled out of fondant, with the middle tier representing the pristine geography of the snowcaps in the Arctic. I embellished with edible glitter to portray the ice crystals in the North Pole. The top and middle tier was then glazed with black royal icing to symbolise the oil, staying true to the artwork.

I also came across an art piece that was made for an Earth Day school art project. It is so important that the younger generation understands the importance of preserving Mother Nature before it is too late for not just other living beings, but us humans too. The school project was made using coloured bottle caps in various colours and was arranged to resemble Earth and the galaxy. I fell in love with the imagery and the depth the piece brought, and so I recreated it with gumpaste against a black square tier of cake.
