Word of caution with this technique.
I did this trial on a cake dummy in preparation for a cake this weekend. On my test I used some left over MMF that was very soft and pliable. When adding the black stripes and rolling it, they blended beautifully since the MMF was very soft.
On my real cake, I used wilton fondant and guess what…. total disaster. I wish I had taken a picture. After applying the black stripes and rolling the pieces of fondant, they were not adhering to each other, added shortening but still it was not happening. Had lots of cracks, breakage, the black stripes were coming off and it did not have a professional look like this sample. In the middle of the night, I had to re do the cake and ended up covering my tier with ruffles.
