I made this formula 1 car for my boyfriend’s 30th birthday. It has always been his dream to go see the Formula 1 in Monaco. He was so happy to find out he would be surprised with a trip to get to see the race this summer. The cake was a way to surprise him.

The Red Bull car was made by cutting out a template Masonite board and I built it up from there, carving the cake into the shape of the car. Once the car was covered in fondant I used three shades of blue to airbrush the car. The Masonite board that supports the cake sits several inches off the cake board. I did this so that the car looked like it could be moving.

After I built the structure I decide well why not make the cake move, so with three mini motors routed with a switch to the bottom of the template I attached it to axels that I made myself and covered in gumpaste. All four tires on the car spun and made a driving noise.

The size of the car was about 2 1/2 ft long.

I was very happy how this cake came out in the very short time I had to make it. If I had more than two short days I would have tried to perfect it (like make the tires to actual scale) I also wish I had a better photo but unfortunately my camera was being fixed and I had to use my phone. And the look on my boyfriends face when he got a moving cake was priceless!

Ingenious! My husband would love this being an avid GP fan himself.
