Need Help with Guitar Cake!

Hi all,
I was “volunteered” by a dear friend to make her a guitar cake. But not just any guitar cake – a Stevie Ray Vaughn guitar cake. 3D – no way around it. I am going to try to attempt the water color on fondant technique since I do not have an airbrush – but other than that.. I need helpful tips/templates/anything! She doesn’t want a picture of it on a cake.. she wants the cake. Are there any tutorials or helpful advice you can give me?

I think the hardest thing is starting! I drew the guitar I was making out on paper first, laid it over sheet cakes that I but on a board and cut it out. I iced it then covered it with fondant. I had to make the guitar look faded and worn. I actually hand painted it. It turned out well. It was also way easier than I thought it would be.

Hi, i have done a couple of 3D guitars. From personal experience I would say that a full size is easier to do than a sealed down version. Good luck :o) x

Ive also done a couple of guitar cakes and I have to agree that life size is so much easier , if your looking for templates just google that particular guitar that you want to make and print ti life size , we have a place here called office works which are helpful at printing out larger pictures , or you could look up Verusca Walker she does all that sort of thing

Thank you!! What did you all use for the string?

The first one i did i used real strings, the 2nd one i used dental floss and painted it silver :o) x

From personal experience I would recommend a good firm board… a place where I used to work, did not like to provide quality cake boards (to save expense). Flexing of the cake, when it was moved, caused problems with the strings becoming loose and crooked. Time spent trying to fix it… could have been avoided by spending a couple of extra dollars in the first place!

Hi, I’ve only made one but for the strings I used silver elasticated cotton – that way I could pull the ‘strings’ tight and make them straight without actually pulling too hard – and when I cut it it looked a bit like ‘string’ too….good luck too. Oh, make all the little bits and pieces in advance with florist paste, and I agree with Allways Julez above, a strong cake board is a must. xx

I borrowed the original guitar (while the recipient was out of the house) and I traced it onto freezer paper to make a template. I used foam core poster board for the neck of the cake. (I covered it with fondant) I used light gauged craft wire for the strings. (I should have pulled them more tight, some of them came loose. I had the young lady who doodled all over the guitar, doodle all over the guitar cake with vodka and food coloring gels. I knew I would never replicate the original doodling. I Hope this helps.
