hi heba i only do cake international i will say firstly read the rules and read them again it must be so hard to put all the hours in and not reap the rewards ,for me i would say it is important to show different techniques but they must be done to the best of your ability .i only ever have achieved gold in the past never had a place although it would be amazing i don’t take myself to serious i love to go to see everyone’s work and meet with cake friends i have met over the years .hope this is helpful

If you are going to challenge the norm – let the judges know that this is what you are doing. E.g. you choose to do something that would typically be done using RI in sugarpaste. First impressions follow normal expectations and that first impression is very important to the rest of the judging process.

Oh interesting, thanks for that tip, Suzanne. :)

I will have to agree with jenny on the techniques aspect. If you look at 2 cakes side by and side and wonder why one cake did better than the other the judges at the shows I have been too say they look at the number of techniques that were used, how difficult the techniques are and how well they were executed. For a lot of judges color is a big thing as well.

I entered CI last year. I didn’t win any prizes but I did speak to the judge who gave some really useful advise.
