Hi Roo. The trick is knowing how to wire them properly… I will include a link at the bottom, which might be useful for you.
Choose the freshest flowers, and ones that will keep well.
Don’t prepare too far in advance… I would suggest no more than 24hrs.
Store in a cool place, you may refrigerate as long as it is not too cold.
For the bit cascading down the side, actually start with the flowers that will be at the bottom, and as you add to the trail, tape as you go. Join the trail to the top bouquet when done.
P.S. Make sure your flowers are food grade, free of pests, pesticides and not toxic.

Linda, may I caution you where you get your flowers for your cake. I put fresh gerberia daisies on my daughter’s wedding cake. But they were organic. Reason being that most flowers have chemicals and some insecticides infused in the petals and stems. You don’t want that leaching into the cake. Because obviously I was at the wedding…didn’t place the flowers on the cake until 5 pm, just before the reception started…

Hi June. I am very mindful of the variety and source of the flowers, I will heed your advice and make sure they are food safe. They won’t actually be touching the cake, but even so, will take all precautions.

Yes, Linda…pretty sure you would. I’m surprised how many decorators don’t realize the food safety ussue wuth flowers on cakes. My cake club leader…40 yrs in business, refuses to put flowers on her cakes. Says too risky…
