I’m pretty sure it’s lace….

It looks like lace. I can see the joins. I’m pretty sure you can duplicate it easily with an impression mat.

One More Bite

Thank you both for your replies. I’ve been looking for days for a lace mold and impression mat with no luck. Still looking…..ugh. :(

Sharon

Well, I have my answer. I sent an email to the shop that originally made the cake and they replied that it is a lace mold made by a company that went out of business a few years ago and is no longer available. Thanks again for the replies!!

Sharon
I made a cake for a wedding rehearsal party. Top of a bridal gown on a heart shaped cake. I rolled the fondant and I had bought a piece of rough lace trim from my fabric store. I pressed that into the fondant to “create” lace. After placing on cake, and fondant dried, I went over with white lustre dust to make the lace “pop”. I know you could also use a plastic placemat with raised lace design to push into your fondant. I’ve found them at my Dollar store.
Good luck in replicating the design.

Thank you jchuck. I have a few ideas that I’m going to play around with and see which will look the best. The cake is for the weekend after this. Thank you for all the suggestions.

Sharon

Best of luck…make sure you post your cake pic!!

I most certainly will…. :)

Sharon

that texture reminds me of the “no slip” matting.

Well after a week of trying all sorts of methods to produce that look, I ended up using the ‘burlap’ sugarveil lace mat. When I had the initial appointment with the bride, I showed that mat to her and she said that she would love it on the cake. But, in my mind, I wanted to figure out how to do the cake as shown in original picture. I made flat material (Sugarveil) and piped dots on it with the sugarveil dispenser……..didn’t really like it. Then I tried piping dots right onto the fondant with the dispenser…..didn’t like that either. Then I thought, why not just go with what the bride said she liked. And this is her cake. I hope she liked it. :)

It came out fabulous! Well done

Thank you jchuck! You have no idea how many sleepless nights I had trying to figure out different ways to get the exact look of the original even though the bride liked the burlap look….LOL! I just needed to know. It was great fun making the cake though and went quicker than I thought it would. After 35 years of owning a bakery, I still get excited when I have a challenging cake to do.

Sharon

35 yrs…..Wow…..can’t imagine…that’s a loooooot of cakes!!

Thank you so much! I really enjoy trying new techniques. Hubby will be retiring this year, me not for another 6 or so years but, two of our children are in place at the bakery to take over. My daughter does all the day to day cakes now and I do all the wedding cakes. It’s so nice to be able to just take my time and work on wedding cakes at a nice slow pace rather than rushing to get 35 regular cakes done on a Friday and then start my Saturday wedding cakes. My son is also head baker and has been doing a great job of transitioning into the Boss! Ok, I’m gonna stop now, I’m rambling…… :)

Sharon

That’s wonderful…..a true family business!!!!

Beautiful cake

I thought the same thing as mommychef – looks just like the grippy stuff I use under my cakes to keep them from slipping.

looks fantastic!! well done!!!

You must never limit your challenges, instead you must challenge your limits

It does look like the grippy stuff! LOL!! I use that on my turntable as well!

Sharon

That grippy stuff, as you call it Sharon, gave texture to baby booties I made. No one could figure how I did it…and it does make an intriguing design on fondant….
