Hi,
Do all of you cakers make sketches for cakes other than wedding cakes? Lately, I’ve had some requests for a sketch for a 1-tier child’s bday cake. Would you make a sketch or just describe a vision?

Not usually, but if someone is describing how they want their cake with precise details and know how they want each little part of it to look, i do email them a rough sketch to make sure we’re both on the same page, it’s easier than them saying “I didn’t want it like that”.
Mostly people are happy just to give me a rough idea of what they want and let me do the rest.
I occasionally make sketches for the client, but not as a rule, if I don’t have a clear cut idea in my head, I’ll sketch away, to formulate ideas…
I raise this discussion a while ago, here is the link on the subject.. /)
You must never limit your challenges, instead you must challenge your limits
Hi, I’m not very computer minded (I tent to use it as a typewriter), but I do know how to use paint, so I always use that, which I’ve got very quick at. Brides usually come with images of things they’ve seen elsewhere, and I always try and create artwork, (it’s sort of my plan as well as a way to agree what a cake will look like to prevent any disappointed clients). But I always explain that it’s a working drawing, and is to give the essence of what it could look like. I never directly copy the original cake designs I use to help me, and I always give them my twist. The artwork I use is often a cut, copy and paste of different images amalgamated into one design so the bride or client gets an overview of what the cake might look like. I’ve attached one of my works for you to see – the finished cake is there for you to see how it turned out. .

Karen, that’s an amazing sketch!!! I can see doing something like that for a wedding cake but for a $75 bday cake order it doesn’t seem worth the time. I always let clients know that I only make sketches for wedding cakes and cakes with more than 2 tiers. Callilicious, I will definitely check your blog as well on the same topic! Thank you for your help!
