Cute as a button Elmo cake! Thank you for posting the tutorial. My granddaughter loves Elmo already (she’s only 9 months old) and I’m thinking this would make a cute first birthday cake for her. Thanks again!

Love it

Wow! Thanks so much everyone for the lovely comments. I wasn’t sure anyone would be interested! The Greedy Baker, thanks, I did freehand it on about 5mm thick fondant. I stick my glitter on with shop bought sugar glue but I’m told you can make it with tylose and water (haven’t tried it yet) Thanks again for your sweet comments :)

Thanks for the tutorial, Raewyn, Sydney, Australia. Were the balloons water bomb balloons?

https://www.facebook.com/ToottiFruittiCakes

Hi and thanks TooTTiFruiTTi! You have made me very curious about water bomb balloons now lol! I just made them by hand using fondant with tylose to harden. I did them much as you would the center of a rose – form a basic balloon shape, bend a tiny hook or loop into the end of your wire, add a little glue to the hook and push into the base about half way into the balloon. The roll the balloon between your palms gently to secure the hook inside the balloon. I stood them up in foam for a few hours to firm, then turned and hung as you do rose centres. I slid a lttle circular ‘pyramid’ of fondant down the wire and glued in place to secure to look like the balloon end. When everything was completely dried I brushed them with leaf glaze….is the water bomb balloon technique easier? :)

Raewyn, Sydney, Australia https://www.facebook.com/cakesbyraewyn

I don’t know, Raewyn if the water bomb balloon is easier….just saw that they were small and assumed that they were water bombs.lol.
I love seeing fellow Aussies contributing to US forums. A lot of the products in the US are called different things to what we call them.

Thanks again ToottiFruitti, so cool to find another Decorator from Oz. It sucks when you first start hey? Having to convert everything and find out what things are called what. Have you tried making Modeling Chocolate yet? Wish we could just buy it. And I’m about to try and make SMBC for the first time. Have you tried it yet? Where are you based? Raewyn :) xxx

Raewyn, Sydney, Australia https://www.facebook.com/cakesbyraewyn

Hi Raewyn I’m on the Gold Coast. Strangely, Modelling Chocolate was the 1st thing that I attempted. I think this is the recipe I used:- Modelling chocolate recipe
youtube.com http://www.wedding-cakes-for-you.com/
I have also tried SMBC using 1 2 3 method http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBBoRMWcfNc

I have even had a go at making my own fondant…..disaster! I can’t get over how expensive cake decorating supplies are here in Oz & the prices of courses are unbelievable. We have only 1 cake decorating suppliers here on the coast so they can charge what ever they like. Ebay has been a great source for me in getting cutters & the like.

What do you use for shortening? I have purchased Crisco here but it is around $11 for a very small can. Didn’t know if one could use copha instead?

I have just made a couple of gumpaste care bears for my daughters birthday cake for Friday.

This is like Aussie corner.lol. Great to meet you, The Greedy Baker!

I will take a peek at CAkesAroundTown.com.au…..the modelling paste I made turned out quite smooth. I taught my daughters how to make chocolate roses with it. One daughter who was 16 took her roses to school for home ec.

It is so good to hear about making buttercream with copha as the crisco was ridiculously expensive. I know you can also get crisco from a company in Victoria called http://www.usafoods.com.au.

I just taken a look & “liked” both thegreedybaker & cakebyraelwyn facebook pages. Beautiful work! I would love the recipe of the copha buttercream that you use, thegreedybaker.
Yeh, I have 2 facebook pages….one personal which I have just “Liked” you and another one which I started up when I did a small course with a group of ladies in Brisbane. https://www.facebook.com/CakeDecoratorsExtraordinaire The course was done at a cake decorators warehouse it was soooooo cheap. The only problem was driving up to Brisbane every Saturday. You get spoilt living on the GC you don’t want to travel far at all. On CakeDecoratorsExtraordinaire I have posted some of my meagre attempts of cake decorating & other peoples fantastic cakes plus links to others.

Oh how exciting is this?? Yes I like that – The Aussie Corner!…although I’m originally from NZ so can I stay? It was a looong time ago lol!

Now you both know my name is Raewyn but I don’t know yours…… :)

Ok, where to start…yes I want all the recipes please haha! I have used copha and it seemed ok to me but then i got onto Solite. I buy it in a 4 litre ice cream tub from my local cake supplies shop. She buys it by the drum! I think it’s identical to Crisco and is very buttery in texture whereas I find the Copha a little oily, but that could be the recipe I tried. I think the copha holds a little better in extreme humidity tho. I’m so excited now to try SMBC…I will just have to find some time :)

I’ll also have a look at cakesaroundtown for modelling chocolate as I’m sure I would manage to destroy a lot of perfectly innocent chocolate making it!

I get so annoyed when I see the prices of products overseas and postage kills any hope of a saving but I too have found some great bargains on ebay. There are quite a few sites based in Hong Kong that do free delivery that I have ordered from. All the cake suppliers her in Sydney do the same thing and don’t even bother changing the packaging! I purchased some gorgeous sunflower, daisy, holly, heart and star cutters for under $3 each and found them all priced in Sydney shops between $25 and $50!!!

3c an hour is CRAZY The Greedy Baker! I have recently started charging more appropriately and I’m busier than ever. I figure it’s time away from my family so it has to be valued. Would love to talk further about pricing as I’m finding that is the question I’m getting asked most by people just starting out….listen to me, a year in and I sound like a geriatric! lol ;)

I’m off to have a like your page Toottifruitti, looking forward to seeing your little bears too, I haven’t made any bears yet.

Thanks ladies, talk soon

Raewyn :)

Hi Raewyn, my name is Toni. I love how we can “meet” people on a cake site and have a wonderful and meaningful conversation where would never know each other. God Bless the internet!

Yes, most of my cutters and plungers have come from HK & purchased on Ebay at a couple of dollars postage free and it is the same up here in Qld stores are selling them at ridiculous prices and they are exactly the same product.

I only started cake decorating about a year ago….I had a lot of things going on in my family life and it was a distraction and time out from it. I just do it for fun.

I will try and suss out Solite from our 1 and only cake decorator suppliers here on the coast. I will also try my lady in Brisbane though she is overseas at a big UK cake decorators show and wont be back till end of June. This show sounds great. Lindy Smith and Debbie Brown are some of the demonstrators going there. So when she comes back I’m going to do a couple of tutoring classes with her. She is sooooo cheap!

Have a great day today. I’m making cup cakes for our school who will have booths for our local council elections.
