Jan, I have very few cutters and only 1 veiner which is the inexpensive Wilton one. Don’t want to spend a lot of money since I only do this for fun. Therefore, I looked for things that I have around the house that I can use instead. The center is actually a large glass bead that was on a shirt. If you look at it closely, there is a tiny hole on the sides since it was sewn on the shirt.

I hear your humidity/moisture problem. I have been drying my gumpaste flowers on the shelf on top of my husband’s television armoire.. silly way to do it, and my husband hates me on this. but i have been doing that for years now, it is a dry place and the constant temperature keeps the pieces to place. Just last night, I needed to dry a gumpaste chair which needed to dry overnight, it has been raining here in nj and the humidity is playing tricks on me. I just shoved the piece in the armoire shelf and was ready to go this morning…

I only do this for my family and friends, so I know where you’re coming from. I don’t buy a lot of cutters anymore, did that enough when I first started cake decoating. I definitely am going to use a shell for veining when I get time to work on a specialty flower!!

Jan, another great thing to use is a dry corn husk. That is what I used for the camellia. As a matter of fact, just bought some corn on the cob yesterday and have some drying right now.
