I had this idea of making an enchanted woodland cake with an owl for my daughter’s first birthday. With hindsight, i should have made the cake double height to symbolise a tree trunk but hey, my aim was to impress my one year old with interesting things to look at :-)
Interesting things i tried out with this cake were:-
I moulded and shaped the owl from rice krispie treats, covered it in chocolate ganache and fondant. First time trying this technique out.
I painted green and blue food gel onto a white iced cake board and poured vodka over it then used a dry brush to mix the colours together to make the woodland grass. I sprinkled edible glitter on it before it dried. This was FUN!!! First time doing this – not so heavy on the colour next time i think!
The fairies and flowers were made with moulds and covered in lustre dust/shimmer and some with sugarflair colours mixed with vodka.
The cake itself was vanilla sponge (with vanilla extract and light muscovado sugar YUM!) with chocolate ganache.
