The idea for this cake was originally something I wanted to do for my family’s Chinese New Year celebration this year but instead, it has ended up being a display cake as I had only two days to get this together, so did not have time to bake for it. But it’s alright since now I have a showpiece that I can keep forever (for a few years anyway lol).

My initial idea for the cake for Chinese New Year, was to do a gold and red cake with a horse symbol for the Year of the Horse on the top tier, and a slightly different version of my two-tone petal ball topper. I also had wanted to do a traditional Chinese symbol for good luck on the bottom tier. Then I happened upon an Inspiration Challenge on a different site (many of you may know where that is =D) and decided to incorporate elements from the challenge into my design. It was lucky too that parts of my original design were already part of the Challenge’s inspiration board. Once I saw the board, my design brain immediately went into first gear and could not resist using some of the elements so I could participate in the Challenge which is why I had to rush it as it had a deadline. Given an active toddler at home, it was all I could do just to get it finished on time. There are a few details that I wanted to add but I am pretty pleased with it and that it came out pretty much as I’d envisioned.

Oh and also wanted to point out that I used parts of the Marvelous Mold Damask On-lay for the peony decal on the bottom tier which ended up replacing the traditional Chinese symbol I had wanted to do in the original idea. All the gold elements were handpainted using lustre dust.
