Checkboard pattern around cake

I would like to make a checkerboard pattern around a 8" cake, similar to this: http://kellyssweetcreations.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/august-2010-101.jpg

Do I have to use a specific size square cutter?

Ive just been looking at some brand new moulds and then saw your post and thought it may be helpful to you as always fits the size cake that you do,

I would use a 2 inch square cutter, that is just me, it would look very finished, but that is just my opinion.
