Buttercream icing

Hi Everyone, I live in South Africa and use Woodenspoon (like a veg fat) and icing sugar to make my buttercream with a bit of milk. The icing sugar always tastes too sweet. Any ideas on what I can do to help “unsweeten” my buttercream. I have tried using butter and margarine, but the same effect. I am desperate. Please help.

Have you tried adding a pinch of salt and a squirt of lemon juice to your icing? That will cut the sweetness more than you would think. You might want to get a recipe for Swiss meringue buttercream (SMBC) and try that.

I also use the Wooden Spoon margarine and have had the same response from people who don’t like the sweetness of the buttercream, although I love it. :) So thanks for the info, I will give it a try.

I always add abit of salt or salted butter to balance the flavors
