What technique is used here?

I’ve just received an email from a bride who wants a cake similar to this for her October wedding. I’m wondering if anyone has any info on what technique is used to get this texture. Is it an impression mat? Sugarveil? Piping? Royal icing stencil? I’m stumped and definitely new at this so any tips would be appreciated. Also, what type of flower is this?

I just saw this cake on Pinterest. Here is the link to the original site.
Not sure if you have this, but thought it might be helpful.

Oh, wow. Thanks so much. I emailed the designer so hopefully she’ll give me some insight. :)

Thank you! I’ve been “caking” for a little over a year and a half but I’ve yet to try a royal icing stencil. The thought of smearing something across a perfectly smooth cake just scares me. I’ve used stencils before but I just dabbed on thinned gel coloring to get a vague line and then hand-painted over it to sharpen the design. I love how this cake is textured but monochromatic so if I do mess something up I can just use a paint brush to fix it before airbrushing.

I haven’t received any info from the designer but I gave the bride several stencils to choose from and she picked her favorite. She also decided to make her own flower (I’m guessing from paper or something) to save on cost but I’m anxious to see how it turns out. I may go ahead and make the peony anyway just for the practice and for my photos!
