Cupcake Prices

Hello bakers, I may have an opportunity to sell cupcakes to a local deli – but I am at a loss as to how much to charge. I’ve checked around and it seems that $24/dozen is the going rate for some of the bakeries in my area – but if that’s the retail price – I would have to charge the owner less, so she can make a profit.

Have any of you sold cupcakes to a store or deli? I know I have to figure out my “per cupcake” cost – but I just wanted to get a feel for what other bakers would charge in this type of situation.

Many thanks.

Hey Funfetti,

I charge $2/ea for simple buttercream iced cupcakes and I don’t have a problem with that. If she’s ordering in large quantities I would probably do $1.50/ea and that way she can charge $2 (to stay competitive) and still make a .50 profit on each cupcake. Remember, she is just the store-front…you are still doing all of the work and buying the supplies. Don’t undersell yourself…:)

Thank you so much for your advice – I hope that making $0.50/cupcake will be an agreeable amount to the owner. Like you said, I’ll be doing all the work, including supplies. Wish me luck!

Well, if you break it down, .50/cupcake is 25% of the sale…so she is actually making out pretty good (and that’s if she only charges $2/cupcake). Good luck! I hope it works out well for you!

What size cupcakes are you guys talking about? I’ve always wondered the same thing.

These would be regular size cupcakes – but I have several ideas to make them more attractive and keep people guessing what’s coming the following week… :)))

Keep in mind there is a different price break between purchasing a single cupcake and purchasing a dozen cupcakes. When deli/coffee shops sell a single desert they normally get a premium price for them. $3.00 to $5.00 depending on their clientele and type of shop. It is nice that you are thinking about the owner making a profit. But you need to keep in mind of your profit margin. My first question is how well does your cupcakes compare to the local bakeries? Taste and look? i suspect that yours are better. So start with the same price. The deli is getting a better product for the same price. And you will find that if they don’t think they can make a profit they will talk to you about your cost. At this point you will know if you can really afford to lower the price.

You can always lower your price without hearing a complaint but try to raise it, you will hear it.

Just my opinion.

I charge $1.50-$2.00 per cupcake. Maybe sell them to her for $20 per dozen? She could either sell them as $24 per dozen or sell them individually. Many places here sell cupcakes for anywhere between $2-$2.75 per cupcake but it reduces when you buy by dozen. Hope that helps. Good luck!
