Prices for cakes

A friend of my grandmother saw some cakes I made and wants me to make a cake for her husbands 50th birthday. She wants to pay me 35 dollars. What do you think is a good price I’ll attach some of my cakes.

The one with the tools I made with no AC and it was about 100 degrees in the house and the fondant was melting so that’s why it looks like that.

It’s very hard to tell you if that is a fair price without knowing all the details as to size, flavors etc. Also keep in mind that people on here are from all over the world so what may be a fair price for them may not be a fair price for you. I would sit down and figure out exactly how much it will cost you in ingredients, supplies (boards, dowels, utilities, etc) and how much time it will take you to shop for materials, bake, decorate & clean up. To be honest, I can’t see $35 being enough unless this is a very simple & small cake. I don’t sell my cakes but I know what it costs me to make them.

$35 is way too low. Like Goreti said add up all of your costs, including your time, dish soap, paper towels, everything. The cost of a cake is much higher than you think. I’m in Canada and charge $50.00 for a 6" fondant covered cake with a simple cake flavor and decorating design. The more time consuming the decorating the more it costs same as cake flavor and filling.

Years ago I was told a good rule of thumb for beginners is: all your costs x 3 = cake price.

It will add up to way more than $35. People have no idea the time involved to make an awesome cake.
