Modelling an elderly couple

Hi my name is chezza and I’m in Perth and I’m asking for your help. I’m creating a diamond wedding anniv cake and i want to make the special couple sitting on a garden bench smiling and holding hands. I’m struggling with the facial features and spectacles. I’ve searched the web high and low and whilst plenty of pictures I can’t find actual step by step instructions. I’d appreciate no end if one of you wonderful and incredibly talented cakers could give me some pointers and/or sites where i could get some help. Thanks and happy caking 🍰

Hello Chezza, I do not have a tutorial, but I would suggest that you need to do very little to your models to add “age”. As a painter, I’ve discovered that a little goes a long way. Sculpt your faces in the usual manner, making the hair gray, if the couple has gray hair with just a hint of laugh lines at the outer corners of the eyes. That is really all that is needed to suggest age without over-doing it.
I made a pair of glasses for my John Lennon model using a fine gauge wire, wrapping it around a skewer to form the lense frames. Just takes a little twiddling. They do not look great, but they worked.

Thank you so much for your tips and suggestions. I’m trying some of them and am finally getting there. Love the spectacles hint. Thanx again.

You are very welcome! Good luck!

Well I did my elderly couple and after having numerous heads on sticks and headless bodies in my work area I finished them and the cake. Im just hoping it arrived in the UK safely and in one piece. Thanx again for your help. Sandra I ended up having their glasses beside them on the garden bench and on her lap.

Well, that works! Rather clever, I would say :o) Is the link above a picture? I couldn’t open anything.

Nice job—I had to laugh when I read about your having numerous heads on sticks. I always end up throwing the first try out. I finally was able to do one decently the first time but the body was headless for a while. It took me some time to get the nerve to try the face. This year I’m determined to master making a decent face. I think the trick is to find a method that works for you.

Thanx. How do you upload a photo. I tried but it didnt work
