Cake Disasters

Does anyone have any advice for airbrushing black?

Hi All, super-quick question as this cake is due to be collected this evening! Excuse the photos (quick snaps on my phone!) I’ve made this cake….2 dogs, photo album, lots of personalised stuff

….and was just about to take photos when my daughter asked why the little dog had green spots! ARRRGHHH! The dog has grey spotting on his back so I’d used the airbrush to do this and it definitely looked grey earlier today. Now it’s green!

The cake is being collected tonight and the party is tomorrow. So does anyone know if I airbrush it again, will it be green again by tomorrow….or does anyone else have any other advice. Thank you xx

Could you use black dust to touch it up? Which brand is it? I find kroma is green until I’ve built up a depth of colour.

Cute cake!

Thanks for replying Mellie, it was sugarflair. I should have known better, I had a dog turn green on me last week, then when I airbrushed it , it went purple! It was supposed to be grey…and yes I did serenade it with “I can sing a rainbow”!
I’ve ran out of time with this one though…just got a message to say they’re on their way to collect it so I’ve dabbed a bit of black lustre dust on with a soft brush….looks like a small dalmatian now :D

Same problem, it’s either turning green or red/pink or purple :(
What you can do is use real black gelpaste and dilute it 1:1 with water. That is much more black than the airbrush colors and will give a better grey. Just take any superblack gelpaste and dilute with water.

Love making 3D realistic looking cakes <3

Thanks Nathasja, I’ll try that next time and see how it goes xx
