Cake Decorating Tips and Bags

Hi – my parents own a bakery and for my final class in business school I am writing a business plan for creating better cake decorating tips and pastry bags. Specifically I am interested in exploring creating better quality cake decorating tips made out of materials that better keep their shape and withstand repeated cleaning as well as cloth reusable bags that are vibrant colors and patterns. Do you think that cake decorators need better cake decorating tips and bags? If so how do you think that current products can be improved? Would you be interested in trying out new products? What would make you try these new products? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

As someone that has worked in the industry, in places of employment there was a preference for metal tips and the washable cloth bags with lining.
Not sure how you would improve the design… but I would be careful about any added cost for colours and patterns? This provides no added benefit to the customer, so may be difficult to justify with the purchasing department? It would be additional cost that would be difficult to recoup.

thanks for your response! they would still be washable cloth bags and the tips would be as easy to clean (likely easier) than metal tips. The issue my parents run into (and I did as well when i worked at the bakery for 8 years) is that the metal tips tend to lose shape after repeated use and need to be replaced once a year. Would that change your opinion at all or do you still think this is not products requiring improvement?

I’ve never had a problem with any of the metal tips I have – they seem incredibly strong and very sturdy – but I’m not a professional so don’t put them under constant use. I prefer the disposable bags. I have asked around a few contacts who are professional and the general verdict is that there is not a problem with either of the products you mention. Not sure this helps you though!

I have never had a problem with metal tips either… the older style with the rolled bottom are particularly strong.
The large plastic ones have split over a period of time, but are generally cheaper to replace, anyway.
I am very “old school”… I have used the disposable bags, but find them “slippery” and uncomfortable in comparasin.
For small jobs, I often just use a bag made from a baking paper triangle.

Should have said I use the traditional baking paper triangles for small royal icing jobs as well. I use the disposable for buttercream – I use a none slip one Julez with a “gripper” texture which is brilliant!

Thanks, Judy… I haven’t bought new ones for a while…. I will have to look out for the “gripper” texture one!
