Expressions: My story

Hi I am Sugandha from Expressions Cake Art. And this is my story

I have had a baking obsession since I was 7 years old. My folks were posted into the remote recesses of Africa where buying cake for our birthdays was not an option. So we would bake and carve our own cakes, make our own icings and dress it up. The best part ofcourse was licking off the leftover scraps from the bowls. This went on to become fond memories of time well spent with family, something I try to replicate in the small family I am raising now. I have 2 kids , a 6 year old boy who doesn’t stop talking and an almost 5 month old baby girl who hasn’t started yet. I dream of my babies sitting around my work table chatting with me while I whip away in a beautiful floral apron, with them waiting in anticipation for the scraps that might come their way. And while I imagine myself in that apron, I also imagine my hair tied up in a perfect knot, my voice like a nightingale while I respond to my boy and all my tools lying sorted and cleaned up while I work. And when my husband comes home, I say “hi Hubby, how was the day” in a musical tone , with my kids climbing all over him while he bends forward to peck me on my cheeks. Poof !!! and then I wake up.

In reality, our days’ are quite action packed, leaving us breathless at the end of the day- Boy’s homework, baby’s massage, Boy’s play dates, Baby’s diapers, Boy’s chit chat, Baby’s coos, Boy’s food, Baby’s milk…………..wish mom on her birthday, call up the plumber, Ooh baby poo-ed again, Boy says he is hungry, so on and so forth. Life is no longer as simple as it used to be when we were young. But we should still dream on. We practically live half our live , dreaming.

Anyways , in all the chaos I do manage to take out sometime for pursuing my passion for cake decorating. The last 3 years has been mostly about making fresh cream cakes as my own boy initially had an allergic reaction to fondants, and I would find it hard to advocate fondant cakes for others’ kids birthdays. So I feel my growth in the fondant area has been slow, and now that I am back to my former energy levels for baking ( there was dip in enthusiasm in the last 1 year due to my pregnancy and young baby), I plan to explore different techniques in decorating. Not expecting an exponential growth, but as long as I am growing positively, I think I should be good.

Looking forward to making my own space here, even if a small one.
