Wedding taste test

I everyone!
I have several wedding cakes ordered this year so far (YAY!) and would like to offer taste tests. I have no idea how to go about it. Can anyone offer me some advise? Thank you!

First congrats on the cake orders! I haven’t done a taste test yet but are you planning on charging for the tasting? I would, since it can cost alot of money. Maybe limit the flavors to 3 choices. IMO I would cut them out of a sheet cake and into a small squares. I feel like you get a better balance that way than making a mini cupcakes, maybe I’m crazy I probably am but thats just how I feel. If possible maybe do multiple tastings on the same day at different times for the brides so you can bake less. I HTH some!

Thank you for you thoughts! I was thinking the same, but wanted to know how others might go about doing a tasting.

Hi!! I’m doing my first tasting too and thought cupcakes would be a good way of doing it too! I was going to fill the inside of the cupcakes with the filling and then pipe the buttercream on top (since no fondant was requested). Hope it helps and thanks for the idea of just cutting up a sheet cake!!

I only do tastings for weddings. I give a list of flavor combinations and the client can pick up to 3 flavors, 3 fillings, 3 icings and charge $30. If they want to try any other flavors, I charge $5 per flavor cake. Upon booking with me, I credit the $30 (or whatever total cost is) towards the total order price. I have a wedding tasting this Monday and on the 22nd…for the one on the 22nd she chose 6 flavors but this is because I have reworked my flavors so allowed them to choose more. Hope this helps.

Oh and I do my tastings as cupcakes! If they want to try different flavor combinations, I will leave the filling on the side. I try to set up tastings that coincide with other orders so that I’m not wasting or I make 1 batter, make a few cupcakes from it and a small cake from the rest and freeze it. If I had my own shop, I would definitely do the sheet cake but right now it’s just not cost effective for me when they’re choosing more than one flavor.

I have always wondered how home bakers go about doing tastings since many of us dont have a large variety of cake flavors on hand at any given time.. I personally do not offer them but have always wanted to. I feel bad telling my new customers that the best way to taste my work is to order a small cake or cupcakes but I just cant afford to be baking several different recipes just for a tasting! :/

I did a tasting for the mother of one of my daughter’s friends not too long ago. I should have charged. I worked for a couple days making cupcakes in three flavors with three different fillings and two different icing choices. I made white almond sour cream cake with raspberry filling and vanilla buttercream icing, lemon with lemon fillling with vanilla buttercream icing and chocolate fudge with nutella buttercream. When she and her fiancee came to the tasting, I had them all set out on my vintage milk glass plates. We sat at the table and talked for about an hour about the possibilities. We worked out all the details and I told her I would get back to her with a price. The next day she e-mailed me thanking me for the tasting, everything was wonderful, but she decided to have her daughter make her wedding cupcakes. I SHOULD HAVE CHARGED!!
