Cake Decorating

Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom cake

  • I’ve started decorating/using fondant for the first time
  • I used fondant+tylose and created the outer castle last night
  • I used a tin for support but there is no support inside the icing (not sure if I should have)
  • seems to be quite firm (not sure how long these take to dry

My questions:
If I wanted to cut a small door/opening. Can I do it now?
Should I now leave it and decorate a door onto it (I’ve seen both)?
Will I compromise the structure if I put a door opening in?

Thanks

Is this just going to be a topper? If so as long as you’ve left it long enough and have enough tylose to harden and it isn’t going to bear much extra weight it should be okay. I probably would add a door on if it is hard already in case you crack it when you cut it. Just roll the fondant for door nice and thin. X

I would add the door too in case it cracks as Fiona says. Looks good so far! Another time if you want something really hard and sturdy you could try pastillage xx

Judy

Great, thank you. I will add a door, I wouldn’t like to crack it at this stage.

I’ll also look into pastillage. I’m on a steep learning curve ;)

Hi again.

Fiona it will just be a cake topper, that will bear no weight.

It has now been 24 hours and it has not hardened completed. I used the recommended 1tsp per 500g of tylose. I’m in no hurry for this to harden but just wondering will it go completely hard?

Judy I need to make some figurines. Do you recommend tylose or pastillage?

Thanks

Tylose for figurines – you want modelling paste for these so that it is mouldable.
The cake topper should go hard eventually – it looks quite thick so this may be while it is taking longer.

Judy

It probably won’t be completely hard but if it doesn’t need to support weight it should be okay. If I want something to go really hard and it won’t particularly be eaten I put more than the recommended amount of tylose in it.
