Where do you get your seasonal inspiration for Wedding cakes

Hi there,
I’ve got quite a few Brides booked in for the next few months to discuss Wedding cakes for 2015/16 and although they generally come with an idea of what it is they would like, sometimes they really don’t have a clue. So I normally sit with them and we work together to come up with something unique and personal to them. But occasionally I’m asked what’s in fashion…………..so I wondered… where do YOU go to check out what’s hot and what’s not on the ‘cakewalk’ for the S/S and A/W seasons?
Do you check out the Bridal catwalks? or Check out the Colour trends for the season?
I’d be interested in knowing how you get your inspiration, especially for Bridal Fairs where you’re displaying your dummy cake designs.
Looking forward to hearing from you xx
Thanks for your help.
Karen xx

That’s a great question Karen. I am making a cake for our own wedding in May. It is great being able to make exactly what I want, but that’s the thing, I am all over the place as I love so many styles that I keep changing my mind.

I know what you mean Roo xx There’s some fantastic cake ideas around. And personally I’d rather be asked to make a cake that mirrors the couples loves, life and interests. Quirky and different cakes are always great to do. I’ve done some great cakes. And couples that have decided to have a family first and include the children and sometimes pets are great Wedding cakes to do. Be interesting to see your cake soon. And congratulations on your forthcoming Wedding xx

Thanks Karen, getting really excited about it. We are having a 1940s themed afternoon tea, all very homefront and it has been great fun to plan.

Roo! Congratulations!! Karen, I usually ask them to provide pics of the dress, hall, flowers or jewellery then let the cake angel do the rest. I really don’t like it when people send pictures of a cake they want replicated, especially not one they want an exact copy of with a few heavily prescribed alterations. I’m an artist, I design and create… I can’t work any other way, when I try it just doesn’t work out x

Karen as you know, I don’t cake for money. But I’m doing my son’s wedding cake in September/15. My future d-in-lw, Megan, definitely wanted cupcakes and a chalkboard cake. She & I took inspiration from Pinterst….not just for the cake…but decor etc. Loads of cake trends on Pinterest…..love, love that site. But Megan also just recently sent me these sites:

I’ve only done a handful of wedding cakes. So far have gone with the brides spec and add my own stamp on it. I use Pinterest a lot for inspiration and trending ideas. but not followed any bridal blogs, magazines etc. of course there’s mega inspirational wedding cakes in here… :)

You must never limit your challenges, instead you must challenge your limits

Ooh, all great replies xx I totally agree that the way we work is personal to us and it’s not much fun just replicating exactly someone else’s work (and not right either). I like it when Brides come with fabric swatches, ribbons and Invitations, that really helps, but I also like it when they say something like…….can you make me a Centre Parcs cake because that’s where we love to go……that was a great cake to make. Pinterest is a great source of information, but of course most of those are ‘cakes past’ so old news. I’m really looking forward to seeing Roo’s cake. I’ve got visions of that little arrow that comes across the map at the beginning of Dad’s Army and I’ve got ‘who do you think you are kidding Mr Hitler’ going round inside my head now too!!……lol xx it’s going to be great fun and we’re all going to be waiting with great interest to see it xx
