Cake Disasters

The cake that never was !

Hi everyone I was recently asked to make a speedway cake ( essentially a mud track in a field with a spectator stand ) after six hours of decorating and much stomach churning I realised the cake was awful !! I took the step to contact my friend who had ordered the cake and she was very understanding I then made an alternative . I have never been more relieved To chop up a cake than I was that day ! Just wondered if anyone else would like to share there design disaster ( if only to make me feel a little better lol )

I was actually making one last night that I ended up binning! Thankfully I was just doing it for me to practice a new idea but it was so awful I couldn’t bear to continue with it and didn’t think I could save it!

Oohhhmmmyyyygawwwddd…it’s painful STILL to talk about. One of my BEST clients and I designed and promised a huge, detailed cake that really needed a team (as do all my designs it seems). I was out of town the week before it was due, got back and had four days to put it all together. Literally working down to the wire my work got sloppy and the tanker truck (of which I had made them two flawless ones before) ended up looking like my six year old son made it. I literally threw it together in under and hour. It was painful!! I was all prepared to tell them not to pay me but they already had the check AND had a $100 tip on there. UGHHHH!! I apologized profusely and FORCED them accept my offer of a free cake of ANY design for any occasion transferable to whoever they want with free delivery to make up for the truck. They said it was “amazing” but c’mon…we allllll knew it was not even kinda sorta my best work. I almost didn’t put it on there but HAD to since it was their COMPANY XMAS PARTY!! (still hanging my head and waiting for them to cash in on my Redemption Cake – which will be INFREAKINGCREDIBLE, I might add!!!).

I should add that the canopy is a large quarter sheet cake, the truck is cake, the car and pump are RKT. This pic makes it look small but that is a full foam core board it’s all sitting on. Sigh…

That is an amazing cake Jen !! I would have been over the moon with it lol just goes to show how super critical we cake decorators are . I didn’t even take a picture of my disaster but yes definately painful to think about x

I think we have all had those days :) even though Jen’s cake is amazing <3… …….The first cake I delivered when I first started was a wedding cake for a friend.. and it was a disaster :( I live in Florida and it gets really hot here .. and I had map quested the address to the reception.. and well they gave me the wrong way to go.. and I got very lost.. and to top it off the wedding cake started to melt :( .. than I drove up a hill to ask directions and well wedding cakes plus heat and a hill do not mix..lol.. I finally found out how to get there but the cake was a mess.. melted and cracked.. This was a Jamaican wedding.. with rum cake.. and well the men who helped me bring the cake in were very nice and had been celebrating early ..lol and they told me all I needed was a drink and I would be feeling better :) of course I didn’t drink anything and I must add the Jamaican music was playing loudly…… :-D … I guess in Jamaican culture the rum cake brings luck.. and the men kept sticking their fingers in the cake to eat it .. which I was horrified, and kept telling them not to do that :( politely of course but this did not stop them ….. Now I am trying to fix the cake and they keep putting their fingers in it .. so the cake was melted, cracked and had finger marks in it.. and everyone felt I just needed a drink and I would feel better.. when I got home that night I cried very hard :( , but I learned .. I now use dry ice so I don’t have that problem and I never map quest anything I google map since they update every 2 weeks……. So I guess the moral of the story is that when we mess up we learn from it and those things help us to be a better cake decorator .. we learn from our mistakes.. I did give the cake to my friend for free.. and she said everyone loved it and ate it all.. even if it wasn’t purdy :D

That’s so true Bethann live and learn x I have to admit people sticking their fingers into a wedding cake as your trying to fix it would make me crazy !! I just know with the cake I did I had no clear direction of what it was going to look like I thought it would just come to me and because of that it looked like my three year old had done it ! I didn’t even take a picture just couldn’t wait to bin it x

<3 I am sure it was just fine Lisa we are always our worst critic <33333 :))))) .. It drive me a little crazy about the fingers in the cake ,but they were so nice and felt bad that I was crying :-D .. I guess in their way they were letting me know it didn’t matter <3

I made a speedway cake in my very early days of decorating. I laughed when I read your story Lisa as I also passionately hated mine!!! Never showed a soul. Wish I could have cut mine up!!! Hahaha…. Great client you have. Xx

You must never limit your challenges, instead you must challenge your limits

How funny ! Yes she really was understanding I was tempted to say I had dropped by accident but thought I would come clean lol
